Eat Hot Dog? (by padawanlee)

I wonder when kids actually learn to read. Yesterday we went to Costco to pick up some supplies before baby #2's arrival and as we pulled into the parking lot Bear commented from the backseat "eat dinner, hot dog". Carina and I looked at each other with a befuddled look comprehending what Bear just said. One, we didn't mention hot dogs at all during the car trip and second, the Costco we were at was not the usual one we shop at. So either Baby Bear can read signs now or she had a strange craving for a hot dog... what do you think?

Speaking of which...

I was sorting through our pictures the other day, and I happened to find something rather disturbing...

Starcraft

I had to confront the guilty party at once (ahem...Dad) and ask him why there were pictures of Bear playing St@rcraft.

He said he needed to get her started early.

Physical Therapist Daddy

Yesterday, we had this conversation:

Bear: "Sduhk!" (Stuck!)

Daddy: "Um, Bear is trying to lift a 5 pound bag of potatoes."

Mommy: "What? That's like a fifth of her weight!"

Bear: "SDUHK!"

Daddy: "Bear! Lift with your legs, not your back!"

Can You Say Daddy?

For those of you Simps*ns fans out there, here's a couple of quotes:

Bart: Homer!
Homer: No, Bart. Homer is what grownups call me. Call me Daddy.
Bart: Homer.
Homer: Daddy.
Bart: Homer.
Homer: Daddy.
Bart: Da…da…Domer.
Homer: Why, you little…?!

Homer: Can you say Daddy?
Lisa: Homer.

Seriously though, trying to get Baby Bear to say "daddy" has been something straight out of the Simps*ns. It goes something like this...

Matt: Say Daddy!
Bear: Maaaaat!
Matt: No, Daddy! Da-yee!
Bear: (says with a smile) Maaaaatt!
Matt: Da-da?
Bear: Matt!
Matt: Argh! (Or perhaps he should say "Doh!")

In Daddy's Care...

I'm so tired. Baby Bear is napping less...I'm trying to work with her to nap better, but hunger seems to override her sleep. So her naps are horrendously short...so on top of being tired from feeding her all the time, she requires more attention while awake.

So I needed a little break. Right now, Baby Bear is in her dad's care. It's actually funny to listen to. He decided to read his ESPN magazine to her...Some things I have heard them discussing:
  • the joys of the NBA playoffs
  • Tennis rackets and grips
  • Poker and the meaning of a Royal Flush
  • Dirt biking
  • Derek Jeter (He was explaining to her how he's Auntie Maisie's favorite player, "because she thinks he's cute...")
  • "Hummers are bad! Don't buy a hummer..."

I'm glad that she's got someone patient enough to entertain her right now.

Why I Know...

Padawanlee isn't gushy. You'll never catch him gushing over Baby Bear...I think he shows his love for her in his actions. Last night, the baby monitor alarm started going off...Padawanlee instantly woke up, ran over there, and picked up Baby Bear even before I could register what the noise was. We don't know why it went off. Perhaps she did stop breathing, or she just happened to move off the sensors, or something was wrong with the monitor. Whatever it was, I knew I felt fear...so I know Padawanlee felt it too.

This is why I know Padawanlee loves Baby Bear deeply...if she were ever to be in trouble, he'd be the first person to run over and save her.

Fun with Daddy...

Sometimes I think Padawanlee thinks we have a new toy instead of a daughter. Yesterday, he "accidentally" put her away in the toy box with the rest of the toys.

At first, she didn't seem too fond of it...

Then again...maybe she was comfortable.

Sleep well, little doll.

Daddy's Little Girl...

Is this a common occurence? Do all dads like to poke fun with their children?

Help Daddy! I can't see!

Help Daddy! Where are my arms?!?!

I guess it shows that he loves his little girl. I just wonder what she's going to say when she gets older and sees all these pictures of him playing around with her helpless self.

First Bottle...

I'm currently hiding right now. Our baby girl is getting her first bottle today. They say that it's better for mommy to hide out of sight and smell. So daddy is pretending to be surrogate feeder. I read all these stories about babies not taking to the bottle and only wanting to be breastfed. So we prepared as best as we could. We woke her, made sure she was hungry, but happy, warmed the bottle, put on a bib, set her with dad and I promptly disappeared. I waited for cries of agony.

I heard her cry once and I thought, "Oh no, this isn't going to work." I heard a couple more cries for a minute or two, but suddenly it got quiet. Then I heard, "Uh, she's almost done with this one, we need more!"

I guess the bottle experience wasn't as bad as we thought it was going to be. Go dad!
